Officials may ask Paris Hilton to leave Japan; Wednesday news conference and fan meeting are cancelled

Reported by the Associated Press

Japanese officials delayed Paris Hilton at Narita Airport while they decide whether she will be admitted to the country after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor drug charge in Las Vegas.

An e-mailed statement by Hilton’s rep, Dawn Miller, said the 29-year-old was stopped by immigration authorities upon her arrival in Japan on Tuesday, one day after her plea.

Hilton was scheduled to appear at a news conference in Tokyo on Wednesday to promote her fashion and fragrance lines, but that appearance was canceled.

Narita Airport’s immigration office questioned Hilton “for hours” to determine if she should be allowed to enter the country, the Tokyo Regional Immigration Bureau said, according to Japan’s Kyodo news agency.

Authorities adjourned questioning and asked Hilton to stay at a hotel in the airport so they could continue immigration procedures Wednesday, Kyodo reported. There was no answer at the immigration office early Wednesday.

Under Japanese law, immigration authorities are empowered to deny entry to those who have been convicted of drug-related offenses.

Tokyo was the first stop on Hilton’s planned Asia tour, during which she planned to visit Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and open a new retail store in Jakarta, Indonesia. Both countries have strict anti-drug laws and immigration procedures, and it was unclear whether Hilton would continue her travels.

Miller’s statement said Hilton was disappointed with the scrutiny by Japanese authorities.

“Paris was contractually bound to her business trip and didn’t want to let down her brands and many Asian fans,” the statement said. “She intended on fulfilling her contract and is trying hard to do the responsible thing, but this is beyond her control. She is very disappointed by tonight’s events.”

God this is so disappointing. Japan is one of her favorite places! I hope they let her come back later so she can reschedule. 🙁

Officials in Japan are being rude, in my opinion.
They could have told her right away if she can enter their country or not, so why are they detaining her further.

Her case has been resolved in a US court already and her probation has no restrictions from the US end,, other than that she cannot get arrested again.

They still haven’t made a decision yet.

What a mess, though. This is what happens when you get involved with drugs. To let it affect your work and business is not good. Please Paris, make these problems go away for good!

But I think it was a good idea for her go to on a promotional tour after she plead guilty. The verdict was no shock to her after all. She could now use all this attention and shift it towards her products and let the public see her in a different way after all the negative crap they read and heard from the merciless media.

It is ridiculous is what it is. Japanese officials are making a scapegoat out of Paris for publicity.

Paris had 2 DUI’s back in 2006-2007, acts that could have caused actual harm to others, but since the world loves to get drunk, it’s no problem. This time Paris wasn’t driving, wasn’t endangering anyone, but OMG “it’s drugs!” and she gets banned.

This is what happens when you have people who react with a narrow mind. After John Lennon made his ‘we’re more popular than Jesus now’ quote, South Africa banned the playing of Beatles records for five years.

Course The Beatles did drugs most of the time for nearly their entire career – from speed to weed to hallucinogens to harder drugs — and they still did great work and made a ton of money.

A drug-arrest did cause John some hassle with getting his green card later on in the USA, the drug capital of the world, but that was all political. Because Nixon felt threatened.

Drug laws are BS and need to be changed.

You’re cool with me, Paris.

They talked to her for 2 days, because they could. The japs love her, but have to save face. Good on Paris too tell them, I am leaving. They are wankers!

I know my position is not a popular one, especially since I’m rebelling against today’s culture where there’s heavy alcohol and drug use. Some of you may see nothing wrong with someone doing cocaine, but others, like me, do. That’s fine, it’s just my opinion. But I would encourage her to stop doing it.

It’s not normal that a promotional tour has been cancelled because she got caught with cocaine. There’s something not right here… You can blame the laws, or you can blame Paris for being, perhaps, a bit irresponsible.

We may disagree with laws against drugs, but whether you want to or not, you are still obliged to follow them like anyone else, and if you don’t, there will be consequences. That’s the way things are right now. You can’t fight against it.

Sorry if you guys disagree with my position on drugs, but yeah, I personally think we would live in a much better world if we were in drug free society, a pipe dream.
