No charges against Paris Hilton over friend’s possession of marijuana

Reported by CNN.com

A drug charge against Paris Hilton, who was detained Friday in South Africa on suspicion of marijuana possession, has been dropped, police said.

Hilton and another woman, Jennifer Rovero, were taken into custody at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium on possession charges, police said in a statement.

The single count against the heiress was dropped after Rovero pleaded guilty to the same charge, police said. She faces a fine.

Hilton appeared calm when she appeared before a magistrate judge in Port Elizabeth, a reporter for affiliate ETV told CNN. Rovero works as a freelance photographer for Hilton, reporter Lance Witten said.

Hilton’s publicist, in a statement to CNN, said the incident “was a complete misunderstanding, and it was actually another person in the group who did it.”

Dawn Miller, the publicist, said Hilton was accused of smoking marijuana and said “no charges will be made” against her.

“The authorities have apologized for wrongfully accusing her since she had nothing to do with the incident,” Miller said.

Miller said Hilton was in South Africa for the World Cup.

Police said they approached the two women after smelling marijuana outside the stadium where a match had been played. Hilton and Rovero were ushered into the stadium after a marijuana cigarette was tossed on the floor, police said.

They were spotted again inside the stadium, and a bodyguard handed over a second cigarette to authorities, police said.

The way the media reported it got me worried a bit. All of them massively reported it! But yet, funny thing is that she has nothing to do with it. This shouldn’t be in the news.

People are going to read those headlines and make a quick association between drug and Paris without even reading the article. This is not good! The media needs to apologize to her! Damn them, always insistently ready to post anything negative about Paris even if it has nothing to do with her. They couldn’t even confirm the story before they published it.

The police are HUNGRY TIGERS trying to get close to Paris, just to look at her! No doubt.

JWB… really? I cringed reading your comment.

But anyway – on topic. The way the media has handled this story is absolutely ridiculous and I completely understand your frustration, admin. This was on the news tonight in Australia and basically all they said was “Paris was arrested for drug posessions and later released without any charges” So the general public thinks she has cocaine and used her status to get free. This isn’t Lindsay Lohan we’re talking about. The truth is – It was one of Paris’ friends, it wasn’t her. And it was a single spliff, I mean it’s genuinely no biggie. I wish they’d report this but I guess that isn’t as exciting as ‘Paris Hilton arresed in South Africa for drug posession!!!’. It’s really pathetic. I think Paris handled it wonderfully on her twitter though, addressed it once and then hasn’t yet. She’s a champ.

It was reported in the South African press, that the girls where being watched by undercover police when in the stadium, and then followed to their bus. Come on surely the police have more important things to do than perve on a PRINCESS! Does anyone really think Paris and Jennifer were any threat to the population of Port Elizabeth? I rest my case. Your Honour.
